The group used symbolism to identify four key stages of childhood
Baby
Toddler/pre-school
School age
Teenage/adolescence
The four panels were constructed using silk painting and quilting techniques. These run through the centre of the textile feature from left to right.
The background to the feature depicts colours associated with the four stages of childhood identified by the participants merging from the pastel shades of babyhood to the darker bolder colours of adolescence.
The background was constructed using fabric painting and printing techniques.
The words moving through the feature express emotions and feelings identified by participants as reflective of their parenting experiences, both positive and less positive.
Thought was given to the colour association attached to these words. A mixture of fabric painting, silk painting, quilting and stencilling were used to capture these expressions.
Finally the feature was embellished using beads and sequins to symbolize the sparkle and precious nature of the bond between the participants and their children.
Each participant also constructed an individual textile feature applying the skills developed during the construction of the group feature. The words are personal to their parenting experience.
