Project Name: The Welbeck Murals
Project Phase: Project Complete
Aims:

The ‘Welbeck Murals Project’ undertook to decorate the four school corridors leading directly into the classrooms, using the themes of:

* Jungle – Reception * Underwater Sea life – Year ½ * Dinosaurs – Year 3
* Ashington Heritage – Year ¾

A consultation with all Welbeck pupils took place in September 2004. Their ideas and drawings were incorporated into the final design. All drawings were in project booklets presented to the school.

An ‘After School Art Club’ was established which complimented the Mural Project. Children took part in a range of creative activities which incorporated the selected mural themes, under the guidance of project leaders, teachers, community volunteers and parents. Some of the parents also assisted in the painting of the murals under the supervision of a team of community artists.

CJALtd had three ‘community volunteers’ involved to help the children throughout the Project. CJALtd would like to thanks our volunteers Linda Skitt, Frieda Dobson and the late Carla Crane.

To enhance the Local Heritage theme of the Ashington area, CJALtd invited Mike Kirkup – Local historian & author to talk to the children about Ashington’s Mining history.

Welbeck Primary won the Gold Artmark Award soon after our project
