CJALtd Overseas Projects

As part of the company’s international development CJALtd has committed its Fund Sourcing expertise for a group of projects in Tanzania which support education for sustainable ways of living in Tanzania and the United Kingdom inspired by indigenous cultures and their values.

Serian UK and its partners echo several core objectives held by CJALtd which focus upon the role of community in the preservation of local heritage and the transmission of knowledge through inter-generational work and the creative celebration of the local culture.

Aang Serian - ‘House of Peace’ in the Maasan language, is a non-profit non-governmental organisation founded in March 1999 and is now fully registered with the Tanzanian Government. Its aim is to offer appropriate education that combines ‘traditional’ and ‘modern’ knowledge and skills, to preserve indigenous wisdom and promote sustainable ways of life.

Noonkodin Secondary School is a co-educational day and boarding school, owned and managed by Aang Serian, in the village of Eluwai, near Arusha. The schools aim is unique in Tanzania. It aims to find an appropriate balance between ‘indigenous’ and ‘western’ knowledge, skills and teaching methods.

Alongside the national secondary curriculum, students participate in a co-curricular programme that focuses on four target areas:

  1. Indigenous Knowledge local history, languages, culture, rituals & ceremonies
  2. Environment & Society traditional environmental knowledge, linking global environmental problems to local contexts
  3. Sustainable Living organic farming & gardening, appropriate technologies, community economies
  4. Moral & Spiritual Education focusing on positive values such as respect, tolerance, justice, compassion & truthfulness

Noonkadin also differs from most other Tanzanian secondary schools in its accessibility. The majority of students are Masai, ranging from 14 to 25 years. The school offers a one-year Access Course, aimed at improving language skills in preparation for secondary level studies.

Scholarships are offered to students of high potential from low-income families.

CJALtd has undertaken to source funding which will initially be used to complete an underground water storage tank and provide a boys dormitory. CJALtd has also undertaken to develop ‘educational’ and ‘creative trade’ links promoting international links between UK schools and Craft based trading opportunities. There are several ways in which companies and individuals can become involved in this project.
